Skin ageing is a gradual process associated with the loss of certain fundamental skin properties that eventually result in wrinkles, laxity, and changes in pigmentation, among others. Skin ageing depends on genetics, lifestyle, diet, and environmental factors.

Skin ageing is a complex and multifactorial process mainly caused by an imbalanced redox status, DNA mutation, telomere shortening, and cell senescence, among others. Within the skin, the production of collagen and elastin slows down, dead skin cells do not shed quickly, and the turnover of new skin cells decreases.

The regular consumption of fruits, vegetables, and certain herbs rich in biologically active compounds is proposed to be one of the best strategies against skin ageing and natural beauty. By improving the skin structure and function due to protective antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cellular renewal, and collagen synthesis properties, naturally occurring nutricosmetics are built upon the basis that a “beautiful and healthy skin is a reflection of the inner health and balance.” Thus, using ingestible ingredients in tandem with topical solutions can provide deeper support to obtain a more beautiful and healthy skin.

Preserving telomeres and reducing cell senescence

An important and novel way for improving collagen synthesis, extracellular matrix integrity and skin ageing depends on the activity of the fibroblast cell.

However, as time goes by, the fibroblast begins to accumulate oxidative damage that eventually leads to senescence, i.e., losing the ability to replicate, and experience a decline in normal cellular functions. This leads to a situation where the skin is not capable of efficiently repairing damaged collagen, with a consequent loss of a functional support matrix related to the visible signs of ageing, such as fines lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

Each cell has a set biological clock that determines when they can reach this senescence phase: the telomeres. Telomeres are repetitive nucleotide sequences that cap the ends of chromosomes from degradation, and they become shorter with each cell division that ultimately result in cellular senescence and limited numbers of cell division. An enzyme, telomerase, has been shown to slow or even reverse telomere shortening, but the amount of telomerase declines as we get older.

Eternalyoung slows the aging process at its root

Inspired by nature and driven by science, Monteloeder developed eternalyoung. Eternalyoung is a proprietary botanical blend, comprised of Centella asiatica, Cistanche sp., pomegranate, and orange extracts, specifically designed to delay, from inside, the normal skin ageing process by inhibiting cellular senescence by reducing the fibroblast telomere shortening rate thanks in part to its ability to activate telomerase. By reducing telomere shortening, eternalyoung prolongs cellular lifespan, allowing cells to escape from senescence and make old cells function as they did when they were younger.

The effectiveness of eternalyoung has been shown in vitro (fibroblast and melanocytes) as well as in a large-scale clinical trial with 60 subjects ages 35 to 65 years.

In the different preclinical studies performed it was demonstrated that eternalyoung counteracts 3 key mechanisms of skin ageing:

  1. TELOMERE SHORTENING: eternalyoung significantly reduces telomere shortening in stressed and non-stressed replicating human skin cells. Also, it reduces the percentage of very small telomeres (
     

  2. OXIDATIVE STRESS: Reactive oxygen species play a critical role in dermal extracellular matrix alterations of both intrinsic and extrinsic ageing, which promote gene expression changes leading to collagen degradation, among other effects. Eternalyoung protects fibroblasts against free radicals, limiting their aging effects.
     

  3. GLYCATION: eternalyoung significantly reduced the levels of AGEs (advanced glycation end-products) in fibroblasts. AGEs alter skin physiology by impairing deposition, organization, and physicochemical properties of dermal extracellular matrix components. Thus, counteracting glycation is considered an important anti-ageing approach in the maintenance of healthy skin texture.

These effects at the molecular level translate into an effective anti-ageing activity of eternalyoung, which has been corroborated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. The results demonstrated that a daily intake of 225 mg of eternalyoung was enough to produce visible and structural improvements in the skin and signs of ageing.  In fact, the ingredient positively influenced all the clinically monitored parameters, both compared to baseline and placebo group, as early as four weeks. After 12 weeks eternalyoung:

  • Improved skin elasticity (+17%), firmness (+12%), and reduced skin fatigue (-12%).

  • Reduced wrinkle depth (-14%) and improved skin texture.

  • Increased skin thickness and re-densified skin.

  • Strengthened the skin barrier by reducing transdermal water loss (-14%) and increasing skin moisturization (+20%).

  • Improved overall skin complexion, lightening dark spots, and increasing skin radiance (+27%).

  • The benefits of the product were substantiated by a self-assessment questionnaire as the treatment product was highly rated by volunteers regarding its efficacy.

In conclusion, eternalyoung is a natural botanical blend specifically designed to delay skin ageing by reducing telomere shortening and subsequently cellular lifespan, giving rise to younger-looking, firmer skin.
