By eating a healthy, balanced diet, most people are able to get all the vitamins and minerals they need, but as modern lifestyles shift diets further and further away from nutrient-dense foods, nutrient deficiency is becoming a widespread epidemic. Millions of us take vitamins and dietary supplements hoping to achieve good health, ease our illnesses or defy ageing. Recent years have seen a massive boom in supplement use as consumers are more engaged in healthy living and taking care of themselves – in 2009 the UK market for dietary supplements was worth more than £670 million. But with thousands of multivitamins, minerals, and other unpronounceable supplements lining the shelves, it’s hardly a surprise people are confused. We're joined by Jessie Shafer, registered dietician and editor in chief for Delicious Living, to discuss where supplementation fits into a healthy diet.
