What do you think sets Lonza apart from its competitors?

“Lonza has a unique portfolio that runs through the complete value chain. Our current offering consists of our Capsugel premium hard capsule portfolio, our science-based ingredients, and our dosage form solutions where we produce finished and innovative nutraceutical products.

“What also makes us special is our full suite of concept-to-market services. For example, our Launch with Lonza innovation suite enables us to partner with nutraceutical brands to bring new ideas to life, helping them to design, develop and manufacture their next breakthrough innovation in line with the latest market trends.”

Tell us a bit more about this concept-to-market service.

“Launch with Lonza provides a full suite of concept-to-market services, helping brands to turn their ideas into breakthrough products. At Lonza, we’re driven by our purpose to enable a healthier world. It’s the ‘why’ behind everything we do and it’s the driving force behind our Launch with Lonza innovation services.

“So, whether you’re looking for that next big idea or need formulation and manufacturing support, our end-to-end services can help you get to market - fast. Lonza's team of experts will work with you hand-in-hand to increase the value of your brand - uncovering the latest market trends, troubleshooting technical challenges, and helping to differentiate your product in a competitive marketplace with innovative capsule technologies and dosage forms.”

What capsule and ingredient innovations will you be showcasing at Vitafoods?

“We’ll be at booth G80 at Vitafoods Europe 2023, showcasing a range of launch-ready formulas and innovative dosage forms. These will include versatile, ready-to-launch, plant-based dosage form technologies, including Capsugel Vcaps capsules and Capsugel Vcaps Plus capsules, as well as Lonza’s Capsugel Vcaps Plus food-coloured capsules and Capsugel Vcaps Plus White Opal capsules, for visual appeal and a titanium dioxide-free dosage form.

“In addition, Lonza’s unique, ready-to-launch, vegetarian Capsugel DRcaps designed-release capsules can help protect sensitive ingredients - such as probiotics - from stomach acidity. This ensures efficacy, while also protecting against humidity to optimise shelf life.

“We’ll also be showcasing new innovations for Lonza’s UC-II undenatured type-II collagen - our science-backed joint health solution - highlighting its versatility. And finally, we’ll have a full suite of concept-to-market formulations, all featuring trending ingredients and innovative delivery forms. These are all designed to support key consumer needs, from mood and cognitive health through to sleep and skin health in dosage forms that can combine liquids and solids or provide specific release profiles and functionality.”

What product categories will you be targeting at Vitafoods?

“Lonza will be focusing in particular on the fast-growing active lifestyle and joint health categories. Joint health products containing collagen are growing at a rate of 30% — among the fastest in the supplement industry. Our UC-II undenatured type II collagen is a breakthrough ingredient in this space thanks to its unique mechanism of action, which triggers the immune system, all in just one small 40 mg daily dose.

“Secondly, Lonza sees a lot of potential in the exciting field of the microbiome. Probiotics are live organisms that are sensitive to moisture, heat, and acidic conditions. The dosage form is therefore extremely critical to the success and efficacy of these products. Lonza’s DUOCAP capsule-in-capsule technology has been shown to offer up to 46 times better delivery of live, viable probiotics than the next best option of a single hard capsule.”

How can your products help formulators tap into new emerging trends?

“As a highly versatile dosage form, capsules can help brands tap into consumer trends and deliver on certain consumer ‘non-negotiables’ to ensure satisfaction. Unlike some novel counterparts, capsules have many decades of R&D behind them, which has also helped to fuel the ongoing evolution of this dosage form. Today, capsules are high-tech-yet-accessible solutions that work synergistically with ingredients, taking supplement design, functionality and performance to new heights.

“DUOCAP capsule-in-capsule technology is a good example of this. Brands can utilise liquids or powders in an inner capsule with a liquid-filled outer capsule, enabling unique combinations of multiple ingredients with customisable release profiles in one, convenient dose.

“DRcaps designed-release capsule technology with acid-protection properties is another solution that can help protect sensitive ingredients, such as probiotics, as they pass through the rigorous digestive environment. Additionally, innovative capsule-sealing technologies enable some ingredients to be delivered in their more bioavailable liquid form for optimal product efficacy while minimising the risk of leakage, helping brands further bolster consumer satisfaction.”
