Prebiotic intervention improves daily mood in healthy adults: Results of a double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over study [video]
In this presentation, Dr Koen Hogenelst reviews the results of a study looking at the effects of a 12-week prebiotic intervention on daily mood and potential gut-brain pathways in 54 healthy participants.

Several studies show the beneficial effects of prebiotics on mental health outcomes, including mood. The mood is often measured retrospectively before and after treatment, and few studies have explored gut-brain pathways.
The results of the 12-week prebiotic intervention, discussed in this presentation by Dr Koen, shows significant improvements on daily mood and decreased negative affects compared to the placebo. The latter was associated with increased microbial diversity. The cortisol awakening response and levels of SCFAs, IL-6, -8, -10, TNF-α and hs-CRP remained unaltered. Prebiotics improve mood in daily life though the mechanism is unknown.
