The company’s innovative fermentation process leverages targeted and controlled techniques and makes use of microorganisms naturally found in the digestive system. This pioneering process ensures that the full benefit of compounds found in plants can be realised.

“The inception of Fermedics was driven by a glaring gap in the market for truly effective natural health solutions,” explained CEO Benoit Daems. “We identified a significant consumer need for ingredients that not only promise high potency, but actually deliver enhanced bioavailability in a natural way.”

Consistency and quality of fermentation techniques

Daems and his team focused on naturally improving health benefits, through enhancing the bioavailability and bioactivity of nutrients from medicinal plants. The goal was to harness the power of fermentation to provide a natural and effective way of boosting health.

“Our journey began with extensive research into traditional fermentation methods and their modern applications,” said Daems. “One of the primary challenges we faced was ensuring the consistency and quality of our fermentation process. Linked to that was finding the right manufacturing partner with the capabilities and knowledge of fermenting botanicals.”

Achieving targeted and controlled fermentation, while at the same time optimising fermentation conditions, required rigorous experimentation and refinement. Daems and his team also had to navigate regulatory requirements and ensure that all processes adhered to strict quality management systems.

“The science behind our ingredients is rooted in enhancing the bioaccessibility, bioavailability, and bioactivity of plant-based nutrients,” he said. “Our fermentation process frees nutrients from their natural matrix, making them more accessible to the body.

“It also breaks down large molecules into smaller, more absorbable forms and activates beneficial precursors into bioactive compounds.”

This results in increased bioactivity, where probiotics are converted into postbiotics, such as organic acids and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These offer significant health benefits, such as improved gut health, enhanced mental health and longevity, as well as better cardio-metabolic health.

Gut health, mental wellness, and cardio-metabolic health

Daems sees health-conscious individuals looking for natural, effective solutions to support their overall well-being as a key target group. The company also believes that its products will be of interest to people looking more specifically at gut health, mental wellness, and cardio-metabolic health.

“Consumers appreciate our natural approach, while industry experts recognise the efficacy of our products and the innovation behind our fermentation process,” he said. “We feel this positive reception has validated our approach.”

Further validation recently came in the form of the Vitafoods Europe Startup Innovation Challenge, where Fermedics was a finalist in the Most Innovative Nutraceutical Ingredient category.

“This platform gave us an opportunity to connect with potential investors, partners, and customers who share our vision for a healthier future through natural solutions,” said Daems. “Being part of this year’s Vitafoods has been an enriching experience. The feedback and insights gained from industry experts have been invaluable in refining our products and strategies.”

Fermedics has already successfully launched several trademarked ingredients in key European markets and is currently in the process of expanding its distribution network. Future commercial steps include continuing to innovate new products, expanding into new geographic markets, and forming strategic partnerships with other health and wellness companies.

“We are also investing in further research and development to continue innovating and scientifically documenting the ingredients,” said Daems.
