Consumers are increasingly interested in the quality of products and visibility of supply chain, with recent surveys supporting their attention to ingredient origin, production process, sustainability, efficacy and safety of the finished product.
Botanicals are challenged with bitter taste, and while manufacturers are addressing through a variety of delivery techniques, botanicals are further challenged by being poorly floawable and compressible powders, which can be overcome through binder and granulation technologies.
Clinical research is required to verify safety and bioavailability, as well as inform dosage amounts. Without this information and potential lack of efficacy, consumers may migrate back to modern medicine.
As commercially-motivated adulteration remains a key concern, ingredient buyers should always audit their supply chain to ensure that appropriate quality-control systems are in place.
