Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone, is a bitter and unstable fat-soluble, vitamin-like substance which is known as an antioxidant. Coenzyme Q10 has been associated with improved cardiovascular health and supporting optimum functioning of the cardiac muscle.

Normally, coenzyme Q10 is lipophilic and is difficult for the human body to absorb. WACKER’s approach is to create a complex via non-covalent bonding with CAVAMAX® cyclodextrins to enable innovative solutions thanks to its water dispersibility, neutral taste and increased bioavailability.

As a powerful antioxidant, CAVAQ10® brings a wide range of health benefits for various functional food and dietary supplement applications (like gummies, capsules, tablets, or sticks) for heart health, healthy aging, and energy supply.

Improving cardiovascular health

The body can generate Coenzyme Q10 to a certain degree on its own. But production in the body declines as we age. Statins, which are regularly prescribed to combat high cholesterol, have a negative impact on coenzyme Q10 biosynthesis in the body. Furthermore, CoQ10 values are lower in patients with heart failure. Nutritional supplements are playing an increasingly important role in compensating for this deficit and for making a supply of this important molecule available for the heart muscle and for energy metabolism in older individuals. CoQ10 supplementation can improve the efficiency of energy production in human heart tissue.

Boosting CoQ10 performance

WACKER’s solution to form a complex via non-covalent bonding with CAVAMAX® cyclodextrins can generate advantages in formulation such as improvement in powder handling and stability or dissolution as well as water dispersibility.

Scientific results on bioavailability

The bioavailability of the cyclodextrin-based CoQ10 formulation has been assessed in various scientific studies.

In one study, the cellular uptake efficiency of pure CoQ10 was investigated using four commercial CoQ10 products. Uptake of the cyclodextrin-encapsulated CoQ10 was up to eight times more efficient than that of other commercial CoQ10 products or of the CoQ10 powder itself.

In another study, the relative absorption of CAVAQ10® was compared to CoQ10 in a physical mixture of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in a clinical setting.

Twenty-two individuals (who fasted overnight) were given 30 mg CoQ10 orally with a 2-week washout period. After product intake, blood was collected periodically over 48 hours. Plasma levels of CoQ10 were determined by HPLC, after which the relative absorption was calculated. The subjects receiving the CAVAQ10® showed 18-fold higher concentration when compared to the control, a physical mixture of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and CoQ10.

Benefits of combining CAVAQ10® with CAVACURMIN®

There are several studies that have linked the ingestion of CoQ10 with enhanced performance and delayed onset of fatigue. Sports nutrition products typically only target either performance or regeneration. By combining CAVAQ10® with CAVACURMIN®, WACKER makes it possible to address both trending issues together. The combination of these ingredients is especially practical since both provide superior bioavailability in the form of water-dispersible powders.

Additionally, another human clinical trial showed that coenzyme-Q10/gamma-cyclodextrin complexes may protect muscle cells by functioning as free-radical scavengers and antioxidants.
