Prof. Dr. Petras Rimantas Venskutonis is a leader of research team Functional Food Materials at the Department of Food Science and Technology of Kaunas University of Technology. The main topics of his research have been in the area of development of new natural functional ingredients for foods and nutraceuticals from various plant origin materials. Currently his research is focused on development of biorefining technologies for the separation of valuable substances from agro-food raw materials, processing by-products and waste using multistep supercritical fluid, pressurized liquid, enzyme assisted, chromatographic and other extraction/fractionation methods. He is an author and co-author of over 250 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 8 book chapters. His articles were cited >4500 times, Hirsh citation index hi=33. He has been national delegate in various international scientific organizations and EU research programs; he is a member of several international professional organizations, incl. Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and International Society of Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods (ISNFF). Lithuanian National Science Award winner in 2004.

Interest in hemp has substantially increased during the last decade, mainly due to the increasing information about health effects of nonpsychoactive phytocannabinoids.
