Bioavailability is defined as 'the proportion of a substance which enters the circulation when introduced into the body and so is able to have an active effect'. For dietary supplements, bioavailability 'generally designates simply the quantity or fraction of the ingested dose that is absorbed' - there has been much discussion recently over whether krill or fish oil is more bioavailable, but Dr Nils Hoem, chief scientist at Aker BioMarine, wants us to stop talking about bioavailability at all!
