Botanicals: The Increasing Complexity of Simple Plant Life

Although the assessment of submitted health claims on botanicals is still on hold, demand is on the rise for plant-based proteins and plant foods that may offer medicinal properties and support health and wellness.

From a regulatory perspective, the duality of some plant foods having both food and medicinal properties causes quite a dilemma. No health claims have been authorised for herbals, and the use of health claims for botanicals is only permitted under certain conditions. However, plant-based protein consumption is on the rise globally, with new products being developed to help consumers easily integrate plant-based proteins into their daily diet.
